The Ludington Literacy Fund
Established in November 2002 by longtime St. Croix Foundation Trustee Martin Ludington upon the passing of his wife, the Lee Ludington Literacy Fund serves to promote reading ability and skills in the English language among the residents of St. Croix. Developed and administered by the Foundation, the Fund issues grants up to $2,500 to organizations and individuals seeking to implement or expand literacy initiatives.
Sadly, in November of 2002, Martin Ludington passed away leaving the Foundation as the sole administrator of this Fund. The program has subsequently been renamed The Ludington Literacy Fund. Grant applications are reviewed and approved on an annual basis by the St. Croix Foundation’s Education Committee. To date, the Fund has granted over $61,000 to worthwhile literacy initiatives on St. Croix, some of which are listed below:
- Juanita Gardine Elementary School: “Let’s Read” home program (2005)
- St. Mary’s Catholic School: Standard Program for Assessment of Reading S.T.A.R. (2005)
- St. Croix Women’s Coalition: Learning Resource Center expansion (2006)
- V.I. Dept. of Health: Reach Out and Read program (2006)
- St. Croix Reading Association: Mothers Cuddle and Read (2007)
Grant cycles for The Ludington Literacy Fund open every September 15th and must be submitted to the Foundation no later than October 15th. Application guidelines are available at our office in Gallows Bay, or a pdf of the application may be downloaded here.
