Public Safety

Over the years, the Foundation has developed and maintained a close relationship with the Virgin Islands Police Department (VIPD). Working along with civic organizations and the VIPD, the Foundation has demonstrated its commitment to making the Virgin Islands a better and safer place to live. By improving the atmosphere and safety of our towns, St. Croix Foundation, ultimately, seeks to increase private sector development on the island.

In order to make our streets and homes safe, however, the entire community must participate. As a nonprofit organization with strong public and private sector relationships, the Foundation has provided countless resources to that end. Some of the Foundation’s accomplishments in the area of public safety include:

• Providing the VIPD with a newly outfitted substation in Sunday Market Square. St. Croix Foundation funds training, uniforms, equipment and provides rent-free office space for the Christiansted VIPD Bicycle Patrol.
• Managing the Community Police Partnership Fund (CPPF) created by concerned community members. Homicide investigations, fingerprint analysis and K-9 training have been funded through the CPPF, creating a stronger patrol unit and safer towns.
• Working on behalf of merchants to secure funding for the installation of security cameras on St. Croix (as well as St. Thomas and St. John). We have also created a Lighting Initiative to better illuminate downtown Christiansted and Frederiksted for safety and crime prevention.
